Target Audience Analysis and Data

The primary target audience would be around 16-25. These will typically be a more female audience as they tend to have a bigger interest in TV shows and film in the horror genre. They are likely to be of a Western culture as TV and film is something that are advertised towards them in the media. Whereas Eastern cultures have a more collectivist view and probably wouldn’t choose to sit down and watch TV on a regular basis as they have a different lifestyle.

The audience would be of lower-middle class as the genre of horror probably wouldn't appeal to the upper-class whereas something like the drama genre would. This means that the channel would want to reflect that so that they can relate more to the characters in terms of age etc. and lifestyle (preferred reading – reception theory). This may then entice people to use it as a form of social interaction as it something that they are interested in (uses and gratification theory).


The secondary target audience is likely to be those who are within the same household as the primary target audience. This could be parents or siblings who may be around when they’re watching so the channel also needs to appeal partly to a middle-aged audience also.

  I strongly agree that multiple narrative strands are a key convention of long form television dramas. Throughout the first episode of Stranger Things, they begin multiple narrative strands that are then developed on throughout. This includes things such as Will going missing, Eleven escaping and the alien escaping also. In terms of Will going missing, we reach a point where the characters have recognition of the event (classic Hollywood narrative structure). They don’t reach a point of resolution for this narrative (him being found) as this would then mean that there is no reason for the audience to continue watching the other episodes if everything has been resolved in the first one. This then means that the audience are intrigued into what will happen next thus meaning they carry on watching which is what makes the show successful.
