Horror Film Poster Analysis

Image
The Shining: This poster for this film features a lot of red colours for the title and background which fits the theme of horror. This suggests that there is going to be violence and possibly killing in this film, which is also suggested by the knife. The red contrasts with the greys of the main image and is also the brightest colour on the poster, to make the title stand out and catch the audience’s attention. The fact that this poster is quite colourful means that it differs from other horror film posters that are stereotypically very dark in colour with very limited amount of colour. The main image is a girl with a knife held across her face with the reflection of a man in it, looking angered whilst she is looking scared. This already suggests a good and an evil in the film (Binary Opposition) without the audience watching it. This can intrigue the audience as they already know that the man is dangerous, but they don’t know to what extent. Around the main image on the right side i

Analysis of "Horror Channel"

Image
The main title of the ‘Horror Channel’ is in red, which is a typical convention that is associated with the horror genre. This could represent the convention of blood and killing that is usually present within the films and TV shows that are created within this genre. The red is also a very vibrant, primary colour which would cause the audience to be attracted to it and this may be brought up in conversation as a way of social interaction (uses and gratification theory). The primary target audience for this channel is those who are aged between 15 and 25 as most of the films are rated 15 or higher. There are also newer films that would appeal to this target audience that feature a cast that is of similar age to the target audience. The ‘Horror Channel’ features ‘Horror Highlights’ to advertise the latest film in that genre which will attract the primary audience of those who are watching the channel. The secondary target audience is those who like to watch the older films that they

Entertainment Magazine Analysis

Image
The whole of entertainment magazines is usually aimed at young adults aged 15-25 who are interested in film, TV and general celebrity news. This is shown by content and coverlines that are on the front cover as they use it to advertise and entice people to buy their magazine. This magazine has a red master head to correspond the genre of horror. The master head is also behind the main image, so it does not cover their faces. However, it is recognisable of what it says and anyone who likes these magazines are likely to recognise it as it is consistent in its positioning and font. The colour scheme is also red for the outfit of the woman on the right. This also conforms to the conventions of the horror genre. The main image is placed in the middle of the page and covers majority of it. The cover lines are therefore on the body of the woman but have a contrast in colour, so they are easily legible but also draw the audience’s attention to it. The font size of the main cover line is larger

Target Audience Analysis and Data

The primary target audience would be around 16-25. These will typically be a more female audience as they tend to have a bigger interest in TV shows and film in the horror genre. They are likely to be of a Western culture as TV and film is something that are advertised towards them in the media. Whereas Eastern cultures have a more collectivist view and probably wouldn’t choose to sit down and watch TV on a regular basis as they have a different lifestyle. The audience would be of lower-middle class as the genre of horror probably wouldn't appeal to the upper-class whereas something like the drama genre would. This means that the channel would want to reflect that so that they can relate more to the characters in terms of age etc. and lifestyle (preferred reading – reception theory). This may then entice people to use it as a form of social interaction as it something that they are interested in (uses and gratification theory). The secondary target audience is likely to be th

Supporting Evidence Document

Prototype 1: The main image of this advert will be someone stood in the woods when it starts to go dark at night. They will be surrounded by trees and it will be a long shot of them stood in the distance. The only lighting in the shot will be from the moon that is shining down. The ground will be covered in leaves as it is winter. The person will be wearing dark clothing to fit the colour scheme of the advert and with the conventions of the horror genre. The title of the advert will be positioned at the top of the poster but it will instead be red so it will contrast with the black background around the main image. This will mean that is stands out and is easily seen. The logo for the channel will have a black background with red writing so that it blends in with the background but is still visible as it has white and red writing on it against the black background. The selling line will be placed at the bottom of the main image in white text so that it is visible as there wil

Statement of Intent

Media Institutions: The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) lists out the rules of which need to be followed when it comes to creating adverts. The adverts should not cause harm or offence to the audience of the adverts, therefore, my advert will not feature anything that could come across as controversial to others or anything that could, for example, affect someone’s mental health. Another way I will create my adverts within the ASA rules is that it will not have any political agenda associated with it. The magazine companies make their revenue from selling advertising space in their magazine for their audience to see. This creates a revenue stream and they can then use this money to produce more magazines. Media Representation: For my advert, I will also need to represent the target audience in a positive way. This means that they will be not be represented negatively in ways such as vandalising etc. by representing them in a negatively way may affect sales for the targe
